HISTORY OF THE KUWAIT GROUP

The Ray of Hope group started in 1982 at the home of one of the early members. There were
just 3 persons at that time, (Romeo, Charlie and Joe), getting together once a week.

In 1983 another guy called Jim joined the group and the venue became the Catholic Church
on a Friday.
In the early days there was no room allocated for the group due to lack of space and the
members would just gather around in the shade of the only palm tree in the church
compound.

Later, the group obtained the use of a portacabin in the grounds with an A/C unit, which made
all the difference.

It was in 1992 that the group had an influx of members due mainly to the increase in visitors
from outside. This was a result of the reconstruction operation after the liberation of Kuwait
from the Iraqi invasion. We then decided to start two more meetings (Wednesday and
Sunday).

The group has a policy of handing out 'chips' to members during the first months of their
sobriety and also celebrate members AA birthdays as they arise.

Over the years, many different members have passed through our rooms from all parts of the
globe. Owing to this transient form of membership, the group service has had to rely heavily
on the few core members that have resided in Kuwait over these years.

We are also very fortunate in having a very understanding Bishop at the church who has been
so very supportive of the activities of the group.

Our sincere thanks go out to this very humble gentleman. We shall never forget his
example of kindness and humility
Declaration of Responsibility
When anyone, anywhere reaches out for help, I want the hand of AA always to be there;
and for that I am responsible
